On average, military families move every two to three years. One of the biggest stressors when it comes time to PCS is finding the next right place to call home. Decisions about living on-post vs off-post, renting vs. buying must be made. And if the decision is made to invest in a new home at a new duty station, service members and their families often struggle to find the best way to evaluate schools and neighborhoods. They wonder about commute times and crime rates.
According to the American Association of School Administrators, there are currently 1.2 million military children of active duty members worldwide. And nearly 80% of military children attend public schools, despite moving three times as often as their civilian counterparts. Transitions from one school to the next can often create both social and academic challenges, including drastic changes in curriculum.
Less than five miles north of downtown Albany, GA is the sprawling 700-acre campus of Chehaw Park, and contained within the park is one of Georgia’s two fully accredited zoos. The park hosts nearly 100,00 visitors each year and working to make sure those visitors get the most out of their visit is Navy Veteran and spouse, Tara Glenn. Glenn works as the Chehaw Park Member Ambassador.
